The beauty and skincare industry brings in over $90 billion worldwide each year. On average, Americans spend about $722 on their appearance every year. However, you could waste time and money on skincare product brands that don’t align with your needs.

Make sure you’re avoiding these skincare mistakes for beginners before you start shopping. With these tips, you can develop a daily skincare routine for stunning, healthy skin.

Learn more about improving skin health today!

1. Not Knowing Your Skin Type

Before using the rest of these tips, take the time to determine your skin type. Common skin types include:

  • Oily
  • Dry
  • Sensitive
  • Combination
  • Normal

Determining your skin type will help you recognize the types of skincare products you need. Otherwise, you could choose products that cause additional skin health issues. For example, using an oil-based product on oily skin can cause acne.

If you have oily skin, you can rebalance your skin with clay masks. If you have dry skin, prioritize hydrating and moisturizing. For combination skin, choose spot treatments to tackle your skin health issues.

For those struggling with sensitive skin, it’s important to avoid harsh ingredients and products (more on this below). If you have normal skin, prioritize prevention with antioxidants and SPF.

Talk to a dermatologist if you don’t know your skin type.

Otherwise, consider how your skin performs in the morning and evening on a usual day. For example, if your face looks shiny, you have oily skin. If your T-zone shimmers but the rest of your face is okay, you have combination skin.

If your skin is tight or flaky, you have dry skin, but if it’s red and inflamed, you have sensitive skin.

You can also use the wash test. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and wait 30 minutes. Then, consider how your skin feels.

Doing What Everyone Is Doing

Understanding your skin type can help you avoid another costly mistake: doing what everyone else is. Your favorite blogger or friend might rave about products that don’t align with your skin health needs and goals. Though personal recommendations can help you find great products, it’s best to talk to a professional.

Visit a medical spa or dermatologist to determine your skin type. They can help by providing recommendations based on your distinct needs.

2. Changing Too Often

Once you begin using these tips, avoid changing your routine too often.

Each time you switch to new products, it can become more difficult to determine what’s working. Once you choose new products, give yourself a month or two to determine their efficiency. If it’s not working to tackle your skincare concerns, you can develop a new routine.

Not Having AM/PM Routines

Though you should avoid changing your daily skincare routine too often, you should have a set routine for the morning and evening. Your skin has different needs at different times of the day.

For example, you should wear SPF each morning to protect your skin from the sun. Use a daytime moisturizer to protect your skin from the elements.

At night, help your skin heal and rejuvenate with a nourishing, replenishing night cream.

3. Over-Exfoliating

Over-exfoliating your skin can affect your natural moisture barrier. You might notice your skin looks red or irritated.

Talk to your medspa technician about chemical and mechanical exfoliating. Chemical options contact alpha hydroxy acids to remove dead skin cells. Mechanical exfoliators use small beads or particles instead.

Some skin types can handle extra exfoliating, while others only need it once a week.

4. Not Wearing Sunscreen

Never head out for the day without applying sunscreen. Sunscreen is an essential part of your daily skincare routine, as it can help you avoid skin health issues like premature aging.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.

Wear glasses, a broad-brimmed hat, and long sleeves to protect yourself from the sun.

5. Neglecting Ingredients

Before choosing between different types of skincare products, make sure to research different ingredients.

Vitamin C is ideal for preventing degradation. Retinol is ideal for anti-aging or acne treatments. However, it can cause skin sensitivity, discoloration, or burning if mixed with benzoyl peroxide.

Apply your retinol in the evening. Retinol increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun’s harmful rays.

Avoid comedogenic products that can clog your pores, leading to breakouts.

6. Never Scheduling Treatments

If you want to tackle specific skin health issues, talk to a medspa professional. They can recommend different treatments based on your needs. They can also help you develop a schedule to ensure you stay on top of your skin health issues.

For example, you can look into chemical peeling near me if you want to remove layers of dull skin. Chemical peels can keep your skin looking firm, smooth, and young.

7. Applying in the Wrong Order

Don’t apply different types of skincare products in the wrong order. Instead, apply them from thinnest to thickest to ensure efficiency. Otherwise, you won’t reap all the benefits.

For example, serums and spot treatments should come before moisturizers.

Above all else, stay consistent. Consistency will help you achieve your desired results!

Don’t apply your moisturizer to dry skin. Leave your skin damp to lock in hydration. Your skin will look supple and soft as a result.

Avoid These Skincare Mistakes for Beginners

Making these common skincare mistakes for beginners could lead to additional skin health issues. Instead, take the time to develop a daily skincare routine based on your skin type. Choose skincare products that replenish your skin to keep it healthy and supple.
