Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability. It is characterized by three main areas of impairment.

Autism is an impairment in social skills and an impairment in verbal and nonverbal communication. Repetitive behaviors and fixations also characterize autism.

Children with autism will show signs early in their development. By age 3, there should be some impairment in functioning. If you see these early signs of autism in your child, you need to get professional diagnostic help.

Sudden Behavioural Changes

Sudden behavioral changes can be one of the earliest signs of Autism Disorder. It is a neurological condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. Sudden behavioral changes can indicate the early stages of AD.

These changes may manifest as suddenly speaking less or avoidance of social contact. It is important to get a comprehensive evaluation with a specialist to confirm a diagnosis of AD. It is important to treatment or therapy as soon as possible.

Communication Challenges

Communication challenges are a defining feature of autism disorder. People with autism often experience difficulty understanding the language and emotions of others. It is the same as expressing their own.

As the disorder progresses, communication challenges often become more noticeable. As it progresses it may include:

  • Being late to talk
  • Using single words
  • Word repetitions
  • Verbal instruction difficulty

Additionally, some struggle to understand tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language.

Social Interaction Challenges

Children with AD may prefer to be alone or engage in self-stimulating activities like lining up toys or objects. Additionally, they may limit body language, such as pointing gestures and facial expressions.

They often find it difficult to understand social cues and gestures. Furthermore, they may be overwhelmed in social settings and be scared of loud noises or changes in routine.

Behavioral Repetition

Behavioral repetition is a common early sign of autism disorder. A child with autism may repeatedly engage in certain behaviors, such as pushing a toy car back and forth or lining up objects. They may do these activities despite attempts to redirect their attention.

Other signs of behavioral repetition include:

  • Obsession with order
  • Strict routines
  • Spinning/rocking in place
  • Repetitive Movement

As is the case with any condition, diagnosis of autism can be tricky. Consult a professional who can help with their therapy in new and effective ways, like ABA Agency.

Fixations

Hyperfocus to fixation is characterized by an extreme focus on a particular activity that excludes all other stimuli. A child with autism disorder may show unique interest in simple activities such as twiddling their fingers.

They will focus on whatever they have chosen to do, completely ignoring whatever else is happening around them. This may include ignoring someone talking to them or even other activities that might be more important or relevant.

Knowing the Early Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Early signs of autism spectrum disorder can be difficult to identify without professional help. If you observe any symptoms of autism, you should reach out to an expert who can help with diagnosis, treatment, and support. Early intervention is key to managing ASD and can significantly affect a person’s overall quality of life.

Don’t wait for symptoms to become more serious. Get help now so you can begin to experience the positive benefits.
