Today, sewage backup is a major issue for homeowners. Sewage problems are more than icky and gross to deal with, the often high costs of dealing with such issues can be a deal breaker for most average folks.

In this article, we’re going to give you a few pointers on spotting the signs of a sewage backup. Keep reading and you’ll be better prepared the next time you notice the beginnings of a backup.

1. Multiple Drains Are Clogged or Slow-Draining

If you’re experiencing many drains in your home that are clogged or draining slowly, it could be a sign of a sewage backup. Here are a few possible causes for this issue:

Main Sewer Line Blockage

The main sewer line carries wastewater from your home to the municipal sewer system. If there’s a blockage in the main line, it can cause many drains in your home to clog or drain slowly. Common causes of a main sewer line blockage include tree root intrusion, accumulated debris, or a collapsed pipe.

Clog in the Vent System

Plumbing systems have vent pipes that allow air to enter and exit, helping wastewater flow smoothly. If the vent system becomes clogged or blocked, it can disrupt the drainage process and lead to slow or backed-up drains. Vent pipe obstructions can be caused by debris, bird nests, or even small animals.

Localized Blockage

This can occur due to blockages in secondary drain lines that serve specific areas or fixtures. For example, if the drains in your bathroom are slow or clogged, it might state a problem limited to that particular area.

2. Foul Odors

This sewage smell can be caused by several different factors, ranging from sewage and waste water overflows to blocked sewer lines and drains. The odor can be so strong that it permeates throughout the house.

In some cases, the smells coming from the bathroom can be so overpowering that it becomes difficult to stay in the same room. If you smell a sewage odor in your home, taking immediate action is important to avoid potential health hazards.

3. Gurgling Sounds or Overflowing Fixtures

Gurgling sounds or overflowing fixtures could be signs of a sewage backup in your home. If your toilet or tub is overflowing or your sink is filled with murky water and it smells like sewage, this is an obvious sign of a backup.

While a gurgling sound coming out of your plumbing problems could also show a blockage or backup. If you are experiencing any of these signs of a potential sewage backup, contact and hire a plumber immediately to have them investigate and resolve the issue.

Start Avoiding Sewage Backup Now

If you have noticed any of these signs or suspect a sewage backup in your home, contact a professional right away.

A trained technician can determine the cause of the backup and suggest the best options to repair and restore the affected area. Don’t wait, take action now!
