Essential Safety Tips for Using Police Flashing Lights — For Rookies and Veterans

Flashing lights, like sirens, bumpers, and other pieces of safety equipment, are essential tools for police officers in charge of establishing and maintaining safety on the road.

However, there is more to maintaining public order than just mounting some LED light bars on the rooftop and giving them a spin whenever you feel like there is something fishy going on with the traffic.

There are certain rules and regulations that govern how and when you should make use of the lights, as well as some risks that come with improper use of safety equipment. Luckily, we have eight safety tips for using police flashing lights that will help you avoid any potential mishap!

1. Do Not Use Flashing Lights Willy-Nilly

If you think our first is nothing more than common sense, we would like to remind you of the many occasions you saw a police cruiser with blazing lights and blaring sirens responding to pretty much nothing. Yes, many drivers use their flashing lights because they are in a rush, not because there is an emergency. In other words, they misuse and abuse their power to get places faster, which is not cool.

Instead of putting random drivers on edge and causing potential havoc on the road, try exercising patience and leave the sirens off until they are needed.

2. Do Not Use Flashing Lights When Not on Duty

You shouldn’t use lights carelessly when on duty, but you shouldn’t use them at all when you’re not on duty. Doing so can result in accidents such as car crashes and general confusion on the road. If you’re currently not authorized to act, you should let those on active duty handle the situation. The best thing you can do is to alert your colleagues by contacting them and describing the situation.

3. Follow Safety Protocols

When they are needed, turn the lights on by following proper safety protocols. If you are working with other officers, work in tandem and stay synced. If they turn their lights off, follow suit; if they all use the same color, make sure you do the same, etc.

4. Make Sure the Lights Are Visible and Actually Matter

Flashing lights are completely useless if they cannot be seen. After all, their purpose is to grab everyone’s attention and alert them of your presence and the presence of potential danger on the road. So, make sure your lights are bright enough and functional, and perform regular maintenance, especially if you’re using older lights that might be nearing their end.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Use Other Safety Tools

Flashing lights are crucial, but they are often not sufficient for maintaining desired levels of safety and peace. Any serious police officer will tell you that a combination of flashing lights, sirens, cones, reflective vests, flashlights, flares, and everything else is actually the best way to make sure you’ve got everything under control.

Naturally, the kind of equipment you’ll need will depend on the nature of the job, your actual duties, the region you operate in, etc. However, you should still be prepared and have as many tools in your arsenal as possible. They’ll come in handy sooner or later, especially if your lights get damaged or give up on you when you need them the most.

6. Don’t Be Negligent of Your Vehicle When the Lights Are On

Lights pretty much scream danger, emergency, and haste. When you turn them on, you send a clear message to everyone on the road, so you must remain aware of that fact at all times. For example, leaving the car parked with lights still on would be hazardous, especially if you leave it in the middle of a busy street or in an area where there are, say, repairs being conducted. To avoid potential problems, take your safety and emergency equipment seriously.

7. If You Are the Chief, Educate Your Subordinates on Proper Light Usage

Correcting improper behavior is tough once bad habits are internalized. It is much easier to prevent that from happening in the first place by reinforcing usage rules and educating your subordinates on how to operate safety equipment. Not only will that make sure they follow all protocols and stay safe, but it will also ensure they take proper care of their equipment, meaning you won’t need to replace it as often.

8. Remember to Follow Regular Traffic Rules Too

Wearing a badge does sometimes give you the excuse to overlook some traffic rules if the situation is serious enough and demands quick action. However, that does not mean you are free to forget about all rules and regulations that govern traffic. The same goes for the unspoken rules of road conduct and civility. Turning on the lights will not mean you can drive like a madman, and you’ll still need to drive carefully and communicate your intentions to other drivers.
