Perhaps you’re getting overwhelmed by the prospect of owning and operating a new crane. You might be thinking that you’re not cut out for this type of job. Don’t worry. You’re not alone.

Any new operator of any type of machine has the same fears that you do. It takes some time to get to know the machinery, but there are some common mistakes that you can fix. In this article, we’ll cover some common crane operation mistakes.

1. Overloading the Crane

Operators often make the mistake of overloading the crane. This can lead to structural damage and even disaster. To avoid this mistake, it is important to only lift loads that are within the crane’s rated capacity.

Also, all attachments and rigging used in lifting must also be rated for the load and be properly installed, maintained and inspected. To further ensure safe crane operation, operators must pay close attention to the lift path and the stability of the crane. To learn more about crane inspections, keep reading this article!

2. Using It Too Close to Electrical Lines

When using the crane too close to electrical lines, operating it near the line, even if it’s in the air, can cause a power arc in the form of a spark, resulting in fire or electrocution. To prevent this, always check and measure the distance of the crane from the electrical lines before beginning any operation. Also, secure the working area by establishing ground-level barriers around the boom and the crane base to ensure a safe working zone.

3. Skipping Assessment

There are a lot of ways of preventing crane accidents. One of which is not skipping the assessment. Lack of assessment can lead to unsafe behaviors and practices.

This includes the use of unfamiliar machinery, operating outside the recommended weight capacity, and working with no understanding of the components and design of the machine. To prevent this mistake, it is essential to thoroughly assess all aspects of the task at hand before beginning a crane operation.

4. Ignoring the Weather

To ensure a safe and successful crane operation, operators must remain aware of their working environment. Ignoring the weather is a common mistake in crane operations and can lead to hazardous situations. Proper weather conditions must be considered to factor in wind speed and gusts, visibility, temperature and overall conditions.

When lifting load, operators must check the local wind speed and temperature readings to avoid overloading. Make sure to avoid operating when winds gust higher than 20 mph, as the load may be unstable and dangerous.

5. Operating Recklessly

Operating a crane recklessly is one of the most common mistakes operators make. By not following safety protocols, operators are risking injury not just to themselves but also to anyone within the crane’s reach. To avoid operating recklessly, operators need to receive adequate training, be familiar with all aspects of crane operation, and make sure the right safety precautions are taken before anything else.

Avoid These Crane Operation Mistakes Today

These crane operation mistakes should be avoided at all costs. So be sure to take all necessary precautions, such as conducting crane safety classes, being aware of load limits, and inspecting equipment before use.

Follow these recommendations and you can alleviate the possibility of costly and dangerous mistakes. Reach out to a local professional for additional support on crane operation and safety.
