But, like any component of your vehicle, tires are susceptible to various issues that can affect your safety. Understanding common tire problems and knowing how to prevent them is essential for every vehicle owner.

In this article, we delve into the world of tires. We will shed light on the most prevalent tire problems and offer valuable tips on how to avoid them.

Whether you’re a seasoned driver or a new car owner, equipping yourself with this knowledge will help you maintain optimal tire performance and ensure a smoother and safer journey on the road.

Low Air Pressure

When tires are underinflated, several problems can arise. These include reduced fuel efficiency, decreased handling and responsiveness, increased braking distance, uneven tread wear, and an increased risk of tire failure or blowouts. Proper tire pressure is crucial for optimal performance and safety.

To avoid low tire pressure, it’s important to check your tire pressure once a month or before long trips. Use a tire pressure gauge to measure the air pressure in each tire, including the spare. Refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual or the tire placard located on the driver’s side door jamb or inside the fuel filler flap for the recommended pressure levels.

It’s best to check tire pressure when the tires are cold, as heat generated during driving can increase the pressure reading. If you have been driving for an extended period, wait for the tires to cool down before checking the pressure. Hot tires can provide an inaccurate reading.

Excessive Air Pressure

Overinflated tires can result in a firmer ride, reduced traction, decreased braking performance, uneven tire wear in the center of the tread, and an increased risk of tire damage. The smaller contact patch with the road can compromise handling and stability, especially on wet or slippery surfaces.

To avoid excessive tire pressure, refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure. This information is available in the owner’s manual or on the tire placard located on the driver’s side door jamb or inside the fuel filler flap. Inflate the tires to the specified pressure levels.

Invest in a quality tire pressure gauge to ensure accurate readings. Digital or dial gauges are recommended for their precision. Avoid relying on the built-in tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in your vehicle, as it may not always provide real-time or precise readings.

Tire Tread Wear

Tire tread refers to the patterned grooves on the surface of the tire. It plays a critical role in maintaining grip and channeling water away from the contact patch, reducing the risk of hydroplaning. Adequate tread depth is essential for safe driving in various road conditions.

An easy way to estimate tread depth is by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible, the tread depth is too low, indicating the need for replacement.

Excessive vehicle loading can strain the tires and lead to premature wear. Be mindful of your vehicle’s load capacity and avoid exceeding the max weight recommended by the manufacturer. Check the vehicle’s manual or the tire placard for specific load capacity information.

Uneven Wear

Uneven tire wear lead to compromised handling, reduced traction, and the need for premature tire replacement. If you do need to replace your tires, be sure to find high quality wheels for replacement.

One of the primary causes of uneven tire wear is improper wheel alignment. When the wheels are not aligned, uneven tire wear can happen, often showing signs of feathering or excessive wear on one side of the tread. Checking and adjusting wheel alignment according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications can help prevent uneven tire wear.

Uneven tire wear can also result from the different weight distribution and drivetrain configurations of vehicles. Rotating your tires (around every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer) helps ensure even wear across all tires. Follow the recommended rotation pattern specified in the owner’s manual to promote balanced wear.

Tire Aging

Tire aging is a natural process that occurs over time as tires are exposed to various environmental and usage factors. While tire manufacturers provide an estimated tire lifespan of around 6 to 10 years, the actual lifespan can vary depending on several factors. These factors include exposure to sunlight (UV rays), heat, extreme temperatures, humidity, chemical exposure, usage conditions, and storage conditions. These factors can cause the tire rubber to deteriorate over time.

Conduct visual inspections of your tires every car maintenance. This is to check for any signs of aging or damage. Inspect the sidewalls, tread, and between the tread blocks. You need to look for cracks, bulges, or dry and brittle rubber. These signs show that the tire is approaching the end of its usable life or has already surpassed it.

Proper storage plays a crucial role in minimizing tire aging. When storing tires, keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and sources of ozone or chemicals. Store them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. If possible, elevate the tires off the ground to avoid moisture and temperature fluctuations. Regular driving will also prevent tire aging. So make sure that you never leave your car unused for a long time.

Punctures and Other Damages

Tire punctures and other damages can occur due to various factors, such as road hazards, sharp objects, or improper handling. While it’s challenging to completely avoid all instances of tire damage, you can take precautions to lessen the risk.

Stay vigilant while driving and be aware of road conditions. Avoid driving over debris, potholes, or objects on the road that could cause tire damage. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to lessen the risk of encountering tire-damaging hazards kicked up by their tires.

Always carry a tire repair kit and a well-inflated spare tire in your vehicle in case of a flat tire. A tire repair kit can help fix minor punctures until you can reach a professional tire repair facility.

Keep these Tire Problems in Mind for Your Safety

Tire maintenance is a critical part of car ownership. To ensure your tires last and perform for a long time, check for these common tire problems. Be aware of their causes and take preventive measures to avoid them. Consult your mechanic if you encounter any issues. Start your car maintenance journey today to keep yourself and your family safe!
