Sydney is such an amazing city, with so much to get up to on those love extra days off that occur throughout the year! Although we always know (exactly) when a public holiday is looming, so many of us end up scrambling to make last minute plans or winding up with little to do due to poor planning. Make this year your best one yet and prepare ahead of time. The city is seriously varied with so many different activities on offer, it’s all a question of picking one! If you’re in need of a little celebratory inspiration, read on…

New Year’s Day

Everyone is usually feeling pretty tender on New Year’s Day, but if you can face dragging yourself out of bed around noon then there are actually a few fun things to get up to! Hitting the beach for a barbecue is probably the favourite amongst Aussies, the long day out in the warmth with some tasty food and maybe even the hair of the dog is such a great way to kick off the year. Just remember to stay in the shade and bring plenty of protection!

Australia Day

Ahh, Australia Day – if you’re looking for a way of celebrating consciously then you should definitely consider hopping onboard an Aussie Day cruise! Experience Australia Day cruises on Sydney Harbour are such a fantastic way of throwing a fun party for yourself in a relaxed and enjoyable way. You’ll witness all the action out on the harbour, the plane race and maybe even get a taste of a few of the musical events happening around the city on the day.

Easter Weekend

Easter weekend is the perfect time to get out with the kids and take advantage of the fun cultural offering that Sydney has this time of year. If you’re looking for something special to get up to, why not head out to Sydney’s Botanic Garden? They do an exciting easter egg hunt for you and the kids to enjoy, plus whilst the littles ones are scavenging, you can socialise with the grown ups and even indulge in a beverage or two.

Anzac Day

Head to your local dawn service to pay your respects this Anzac Day. After your early morning, you’ll probably want to keep it chill at home with the kids. If that’s you, then consider baking up a storm – Anzac cookies are literally always delicious, but especially so on the big day itself! If the pub is more your scene, gather up the gang and hit up your local watering hole for a toast and a few fun rounds of two up! This day is all about remembering and paying your respects.

Queen’s Birthday

The Queen’s birthday is traditionally a lot more chill than your typical public holiday celebration, but that doesn’t mean that you have to lounge around inside doing nothing! Consider climbing the harbour Bridge or dining at one of Sydney’s fantastic restaurants – there’s so much to do, but a lovely long lunch cannot be beaten.

Boxing Day

There’s an awful lot more to see than the inside of your fridge on Boxing Day! The Sydney to Hobart race is the perfect way to kick off the day after Christmas. Pack a picnic, grab the sunhat and head to a viewing location for a lovely morning of fun. Good areas to watch the action kick off include Manly, Balgowlah Heights and Bradley’s Head. You can also see a fair bit from the CBD, so if you’re already there for a little sight seeing why not head to Circular Quay? This is an event that you’ll remember for a long time to come.

New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve, the biggest night of the year! If you want to keep it low key, bag yourself a picnic spot to view the fireworks and dine the night away. Feeling more party animal-like? The Botanic Gardens have everything from relaxed outdoor dinner to exciting music events on offer.

You can’t go wrong with any of these activities! Make the most out of your free time in this glorious city.
