The COVID-19 pandemic allows a few people to make their dreams come true. The business world opened up in a way that it never has before. Small businesses with innovative ideas exploded in the early 2020s as people realized they didn’t have to abide by the 9 to 5 model anymore.

For other people, though, the idea of becoming self-employed means nothing. They’re happier working for someone else.

Others want to work for the government in different capacities. It’s an extra challenge, and the work can sometimes be tedious. You’ll also enjoy tighter healthcare and more benefits than you would from a private company.

Did these things catch your eye? Keep reading this guide on becoming a government contractor as a potential employee.

Get a Duns Number

A Duns Number is a 9-digit, numeric ID code assigned by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) to identify a company’s data and track its credit status. Registering, one must have a valid business bank account and US tax identification number, such as an Employer Identification Number (EIN). You can apply for a Duns Number by registering your business with D&B.

Once you register, you will receive the number within five business days. D&B may also require further documentation to help establish your identity and business credit history.

After you get the number and complete the registration, you can apply for government contracts and submit your bid. The Duns Number allows you to access credit risk assessments and other resources through D&B.

Create a Profile on SAM

First, you must register on SAM.gov as an individual or entity. Next, you must create a profile. This profile is your online identity and will represent yourself and your business when applying for contracts.

The profile contains essential information such as your name, contact information, and a company description. You may also have to provide a DUNS number, a unique identifier assigned to a business by Dun and Bradstreet if registering as an entity. After completing your profile, you must provide representations and certifications about your business.

Then you will submit the profile. It will allow government representatives to evaluate your business to offer you contracts.

Familiarize the Bidding Process

First, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), which outlines the process and sets rules and regulations. It can be through reading the FAR and attending available seminars. Second, you must determine the type of contract you are bidding on, such as fixed-price, time and material, or a cost-plus-incentive fee.

Third, you should prepare a bid package that will present the proposal’s details and make it easy for the government to evaluate the offer. Finally, you must understand the evaluation criteria for each contract, such as the cost, quality, or delivery terms. Taking the time to understand the bidding process and its nuances can help you become successful.

Develop a Formal Business Plan

The first phase is to gather general information about the company, such as the name, address, contact information, etc., and create a proposal. Next, define the plan’s purpose to identify why the government requires a business plan. The plan must include any information regarding the business’s purpose and growth plans.

The plan should also address qualifications for the contract, details about the proposed services or products that the business offers, and information on how the company will meet deadlines. Check out this article to get an idea of what tool to use. Finally, create a summary to show the plan for federal contracting.

Identify Target Markets

The first step is to analyze the group of consumers that you are looking to target and determine their spending habits, needs, and potential demand. Next, you should research and understand the different market opportunities around the country. Some locations are preferred, and the government selects target markets.

Knowing these will give you greater insight into how you can enter government contracting careers. Finally, you should conduct ongoing market research to stay on top of emerging trends and get insights into customer preferences.

Map Out a Strategy

First, decide what type of service you want to provide. Once you have done that, research the kinds of government contracts that most closely align with your expertise. Then, stay up-to-date with information on agency needs, solicitations, and any changes to the contracting process.

Next, you should determine the qualifications that the government requires to become a successful contractor. Finally, create a business plan and network with other contractors to increase your chances of success. With some research and a concerted effort, you can be well on your way to finding a job.

Establish Relationships

Start by attending local and regional events sponsored by your local or regional government. Second, make contacts online, and connect with people on social media, LinkedIn, and other sources. Finally, establish yourself as a valuable resource with those you develop relationships with.
