The World Canine Federation recognizes 350 dog breeds, which are divided into seven categories. Dog breeds refer to more than the way a dog looks. They refer to a group of dogs in a closed gene pool with defined characteristics that have been bred to perform specific tasks.

Types of Dog Breeds: Herding Dogs
Herding dogs are bred to herd, gather, and protect livestock. They have an instinctual ability to control the movements of other animals. Some of the best dogs in this group include the Australian Shepherd, Bergamasco Sheepdog, Shetland Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and Border Collie.
Sporting Dogs
Originally, these dogs were bred to help hunters retrieve game. They are high-energy animals with a love for the outdoors. They are also excellent at agility competitions.
Some examples of sporting dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, and English Setters.
Toy Dogs
These dogs are the perfect lap dogs. They are affectionate and intelligent, providing companionship and love without requiring a lot of activity. Some breeds include Pugs, Chihuahuas, and Pomeranians.

Hounds

Non-Sporting Dogs
This grouping of dogs is for those that do not fit into other categories. They are not bred for a particular purpose or to achieve a specific size. They can have wildly different personalities and physical traits.

Working Dogs
Working dogs serve a specific purpose. Originally, they performed practical duties like acting as guard dogs, pulling sleds, and more. Some still do those tasks today.
Some of the most popular examples of working dogs are Siberian Huskies, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Neapolitan Mastiffs, and Rottweilers.
Terriers
Initially, terriers were vermin killers. Their small size and agility allowed them to chase after rabbits and rats. These days, they are beloved companions that make excellent watchdogs.
Examples of terriers are Jack Russell Terriers, Bull Terriers, and Scottish Terriers.
