How to Choose Indoor Plants: Everything You Need to Know

VWB Blog 2 years ago 10

According to some research, 66% of consumers own at least one indoor plant. Are you considering buying indoor plants for living rooms or other areas in your house?

There are a few things to consider before you choose indoor plants for your home.

Thankfully, we have the perfect list of things to consider before buying indoor plants, so make sure you keep reading.

Level of Commitment

People have different personalities, and so do plants. Some plants don’t require a lot of attention, and some require all of the attention. So it really depends on how much commitment you can give to your plant.

Some plants need their soil to have the perfect amount of moisture, mistings, and in an area with sufficient lighting. While all plants have different benefits, that doesn’t always mean they’re right for you.

Before you choose a houseplant, think about what experience you have and how much time you have for your houseplant. Is your life crazy, and are you rarely home? Then you might want to get a low-maintenance plant, like a succulent.

Do you have a little bit of time to give your plant some extra attention? Or maybe you are somewhere in the middle. Either way, if you don’t take your level of busyness into account, your plant will suffer.

Water and Humidity

Understanding the level of water and humidity will determine if your plant lives or dies. In general, you should check the rating of the moisture on the tag that comes with each plant.

This will help you figure out how dry or damp the soil should be.

Regardless, you’ll need to water your plants, and each plant has different requirements. Your home will have humidity as well, and that could affect the moisture in the soil as well.

The indoor air can get really dry, especially during the winter months. You might want to get a humidifier and keep yourself from drying it out too much.

You can also use a spray bottle to mist your plants. You might even want to put your pots in a shallow tray with some pebbles and a little bit of water.

Lighting

When considering lighting for indoor plants, some plants will need a little bit of lighting and others will need a lot. It can be tricky to determine what type of lighting is in your house.

Most houseplants will do better in a spot with a western or eastern-front facing window. If you’re not sure which direction your windows face, you can use a compass to figure it out.

By placing plants in front of those windows, then your plant will get enough direct sunlight and enough indirect sunlight for the rest of the day.

Southern light is normally the strongest for plants that love sunlight, like succulents. Most other plants will fry if they have too much light falling on their leaves.

However, there are even some plants that don’t need any light. You should make sure that you put those in a dark spot. This can be a great way to spruce up a cubicle.

Budget

You should also consider your budget, even though most indoor plants are actually very affordable.

The smaller the plant is, the less expensive it will be. However, you shouldn’t buy plants from a large retailer. Just because a plant is being sold at a low price doesn’t mean you’re getting a good deal.

Do some research on which plant will fit into your budget and shop around to find the best deal. You’ll also need to factor the supplies and potting into that cost.

Experience

Lastly, consider what experience you have with caring for plants.

Thankfully, there are different plants for people regardless of what their level is. As you get used to taking care of beginner-level plants, you can eventually get advanced-level plants.

Beginner Level

If you’re a beginner, consider getting a purple passion plant, ZZ plant, cast-iron plant, or dracaena. These are just a few examples, but there are many more as well.

The dracaena is a type of bamboo, and it doesn’t need a lot of light. This would go great in your cubicle.

You’ll need to water them, but you won’t have to worry about doing it often.

Advanced Level

If you’re more of an advanced plant owner, you might want to consider getting a calathea or a fiddle leaf fig.

The fiddle leaf fig has large leaves that are shaped like violins. These can be a great statement piece for your home.

However, they need bright and filtered sunlight. You’ll need to turn the plant every few months so that all the leaves get enough sunlight.

You’ll need to water this plant often, but you’ll also need to let it dry out. When you do water it, the dirt needs to be soaked, and you should also have a pot that will drain all the water in the bottom.

These plants are from the tropics, so you’ll have to make sure you have a lot of humidity as well.
