Did you know that more than one million people legally migrate to the United States every year? While many people legally enter the country every year, our news headlines are usually dominated by the many that enter this country illegally.

But no matter how you look at it, it’s clear that our immigration system is overly complicated and needs a lot of improvement. By knowing about the different trends and facts about immigration law, you’ll be able to better navigate the system and better understand the policies of the United States.

So keep on reading and we’ll take you through everything that you’ll want to know!

Department of Justice Immigration Anti-Discrimination Enforcement

The Department of Justice has started to diversify the scope of investigations. They are now enforcing anti-discrimination rules while protecting American workers.

The US government has faced many allegations of discrimination over the years. Now, the DOJ is cracking down on its immigration policies and putting a lot more attention on discrimination.

Employment-Based Green Cards

In 2019, the US government gave out almost all of its available employment-based green cards. The number of employment-based green cards is capped at 140,000 per year.

One Biden administration immigration policy is to give unused visa cards to new immigrants. They also want to let children and spouses get green cards without those cards being counted toward the yearly cap.

These rules could help get a lot of applicants through the immigration process quickly. The proposed laws would also get rid of a per-country cap which limits any country from accounting for more than seven percent of green cards issued each year.

Diversity Visas

Tens of thousands of people get green cards every year through the American diversity visa program. This is also known as the visa lottery.

The goal of this program is to diversify the American immigrant population. Citizens of countries with the most legal immigrant arrivals in recent years aren’t able to apply. These countries include India, China, Canada, and Mexico.

The Biden administration is trying to increase the yearly total of diversity visas from 50,000 to 80,000. It’s one of the administration’s top immigration policies in 2022.

Temporary Permissions

There are many unauthorized migrants who have come to the United States under unusual circumstances. These people were given temporary legal permission to stay in the US. While they are legally allowed to live in the US, they usually don’t have a path to become permanent residents.

These people are usually in the country via DACA and with Temporary Protected Status. The Biden administration is working on a way to make it possible for these people to easily become permanent residents.
