A little Guide on Automotive nuts

VWB Blog 1 year ago 5

In the automobile industry, nuts have several applications. Technically speaking, nuts are internally threaded fasteners that complement bolts. In practice, there is always a nut to complement every bolt. Following memory lane, the earliest documentation of bolts and nuts appeared in the 1940s.

Types of nuts

Here is a list of the commonly used automotive nuts

Coupling nuts

This type of nut is cylindrical, and the exterior part takes a hexagon shape. Usually, it is used to join two male threaded rods, which are three times the diameter of the rods.

Flange nuts

Just as the name implies, flange nuts are integrated with a flange (a protruding flat rim serving for strengthening or attachment) which serves as a washer. Thus, flange nuts are more efficient than traditional nuts.

Hex nuts

Hex nuts are likely the most popular type of nuts. They are used primarily on parts that require a locking mechanism. They have a hexagon shape and need a wrench for installation.

Lock nuts

Locks nuts are designed to proffer better fastening solutions and secure fixing. This type of nut is available in different shapes and sizes. Lock nuts are used in car wheels, and because of their unique nature, they provide anti-theft features in car tyres since a nut key is required.

Slotted nuts

Slotted nuts are used where significant torque forces and maximum fixing are needed. Like the lock nuts, slotted nuts are also used in car wheels.

Square nuts

Square nuts are better than hex nuts because of their square shape. This square shape provides a better surface area, making it hard to lose. This nut is sometimes used on car batteries to fix connectors to battery terminals.

Wheel nuts

Wheel nuts are also known as lug nuts. Wheel nuts are mostly used in automobile wheels. Because of their robust designs, they hold automobile wheels in place.

Advantages of nuts

Easy to maintain

Due to the unique designs of nuts, they are easy to fasten and lose without hassle.

Corrosion Resistant

Nuts are made from steel, plastic or aluminium; hence they are not prone to corrosion.

Easier Inspection

Because of the relatively small size of nuts, it is easier to inspect and determine the need for maintenance.

No need for heat treatment

The most significant advantage of using nuts and bolts for fastening is that it does not require heat treatment. All it takes to install and uninstall nuts and bolts are standard tools like a wrench.
