Irritation in the eyes can sometimes bring diseases to the eyes. There are various treatments/surgeries that can be carried out for curing the diseases. Early detection of eye diseases can result in most times in successful treatment specific to the identified or diagnosed disease.
Eye and Vision Examination
In the USA, the Mayo Clinic, The American Academy of Ophthalmology who proposes the following schedule for eye examinations
– Five to ten years for those under age 40
– Two to four years for those age 40 and 54
– One to three years for those age 55 to 64
– One to three years for those age 65 and above. If eye conditions are noted to have some degree of risk, it may be suggested to have more frequent examinations. Eye conditions and diseases can occur in the young as well as older adults.
Age-related Macular Degeneration
This condition is most common in adults over age 60. You may know there are two types of this disease: wet macular degeneration (less common, around 10 per cent) and dry macular degeneration. Risk increases for this condition if family history, smoking history, and hypertension exist. The overall effect of macular degeneration is damaged or destroyed central vision or the ability to look straightforward. The condition is said to be gradual in many cases and painless. However, the wet form typically has a more sudden course.
There is no known cure for either form of this condition. Rendered treatment according to Mayo Clinic may use anti-angiogenic injection, laser light or photo-dynamic laser treatment. These protocols minimize abnormal blood vessel development.
Eye Floaters
Eye floaters are identified as spots in one’s vision. They can appear as specks, strings or like cobwebs moving about as eye movement occurs. This is age-related and common when the jelly-like solution or vitreous, starts to liquefy. Eye floaters most commonly affect peripheral vision. The risk is higher among those over age 50, are nearsighted or have diabetic retinopathy.
Treatment for eye floaters may be rendered surgically with what is termed a vitrectomy. Moreover, laser surgery may be used to impede the floaters.
Cataracts
Cataracts are best understood as a type of cloud formation over the eye. This is common for those of us with vision over age 60. The symptoms may include blurred, foggy or distorted vision; halos forming; pour night vision, changes in colour vision and pour night vision. Personal Eyes are one of those who offer two main treatment strategies for cataract: either CustomLens or laser (Lasik) surgery.
Presbyopia
Presbyopia occurs when you find the ability to focus on objects close by is hampered. This is a gradual occurrence; it is most likely in those between age 45 and 65. The condition may be noted during a general eye exam where a Refraction Test is administered to define the specific condition. One may be noted to have either nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or presbyopia. Treatment rendered is aimed at addressing symptoms. The Ophthalmologist may prescribe contacts or corrective eyeglasses.
Conjunctivitis
The eye condition, conjunctivitis, is also known widely as pink-eye. This is a painful condition for those noted to have this condition, and pink-eye may be spread to others. It is typically present when either inflammation or infection appear in the conjunctiva that lines the eyelid. Diagnosis is typically made through a question-and-answer examination.
This centres around health issues past or present. In rare cases, a culture is taken if reason exists for bacterial infection. Otherwise, warm or cold compresses, cleaning eyelids throughout the day with a wet cloth or use of Artificial Tears may be proposed.
