From an office desk to a big-rig cab. For many people, that’s a big leap. It’s a change in career paths or even an entirely new identity. What’s less obvious is how much commonality there is. Preparation and planning are key in any endeavor, and truck driving careers are no different.

If you’re planning on leaving behind a desk job for the open road, here’s what you need to do to be ready for a career change on the road to becoming a truck driver.

1. Take a Written and Road Test

In order to become a truck driver, you will need to take a written and road test. The written test will cover topics such as trucking regulations, safe driving practices, and map reading.

The road test will evaluate your skills in operating a truck, including backing up, turning, and stopping. You will need to demonstrate your ability to drive safely and efficiently in order to pass the road test.

2. Pass All Medical Exams

To become a truck driver, you must pass all medical exams. This includes a physical exam, drug test, and hearing test. You must also have a clean driving record if you’ve driven other types of vehicles in the past.

During the medical tests, they also check for medical conditions that may prohibit you from driving a truck. If you are found to have any of these medical conditions, you will not be able to get your truck driving license.

3. Get a Commercial Driver’s License

In order to become a truck driver, you will also need to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). This is a very important part, as you will not be able to drive a truck without it. You can get tickets if you are caught and tagged as driving without CDL.

You can get your CDL once you’ve passed all your written and road tests and the medical exams. After you have obtained your CDL, you will then be able to begin your new career as a truck driver.

4. Fill Out an Application

If you would like to become a truck driver, you will need to fill out an application form. This form will ask for your personal information, such as your name and address. You will also need to provide your driver’s license and Social Security numbers.

You’ll need to answer questions about your truck driving experience and consent to a background check. Once you’ve filled out the application form, you will need to submit it to the trucking company that you are interested in working for.

5. Finding a Job

Landing a job as a truck driver may seem like a daunting task, but this can still be done. The first step is to check with your local trucking companies to see if they have any open positions. Another great place to look is online job boards and search for truck driver jobs within your area.

You can also talk to people you know who work in the trucking industry or know someone who does. This can be a great way to get your foot in the door of a company that you may be interested in working for.
