4 Ways to Protect Your Home From Severe Storms

VWB Blog 2 years ago 1

Damage from natural disasters costs over 100 billion dollars per year. These disasters leave destruction in their wake, and if you’re not careful, your home could be at risk.

There’s no surefire way to keep your home safe from storms, but there are ways to prevent storm damage on some level. We’re here to talk about it. Read on to learn what to do to protect your home before severe storms.

1. Understand the Weather You’re Preparing For

If you’re new to your area, it’s important to understand what type of severe weather is headed your way (preferably before a storm is imminent). All areas have different forms of severe weather that require different types of preparation.

For example, Texas leads hail events while Florida is more likely to experience hurricanes. If you’re in one of the Dakotas, you’re more likely to get blizzards.

It may be scary looking up storm statistics in your area, but it will also keep you safe in the long run.

2. Seal Doors and Windows

Regardless of what type of weather you’re preparing for, sealing doors and windows is a good idea. Even if there’s no storm on the horizon, making sure there are no gaps will save you money on your energy bills and keep your home more comfortable.

Seal any potential entry point into your home. This also includes space around the chimney, under the roof, and around the garage door if applicable. Look around your home for potential holes and try to identify anywhere that you can feel a breeze.

This will stop the wind, water, and air from coming into your home during the storm.

3. Consider Boarding Windows

You can add an extra layer of protection to your sealed windows by boarding them. You can also board your doors, but unless they’re glass, this isn’t necessary.

Note that you should only board your windows right before a storm actually happens.

You can use plywood or metal sheets. Cut the wood or metal so it overlaps your windows (or doors) by about 4 inches on all sides. This should protect you from broken glass.

4. Clear Your Yard of Debris

This is one thing that most people don’t think of when it comes to trying to protect a home in a storm path. Make sure that there’s nothing in your yard or on your patio. If possible, it’s even best if your car is inside the garage.

Anything that’s loose in your yard can turn into a projectile if the wind gets intense enough. That little children’s play table, your lawnmower, and even your lawn ornaments can be problematic.

Even branches and rocks on the roof can become dangerous. Make sure that everything is out of the way before the storm starts.

Are Severe Storms on the Way?

If you anticipate severe storms in the future, start taking steps now to protect your home. Know what type of storm you’re in for, seal your house, cover your windows, and make sure that there’s no debris that could become dangerous.

Stay safe!
